The Pink Rose Ball is an annual event held to raise funds for The Abaco Cancer Society which assists patients in covering travel for doctor’s visits, treatment, and medications. The Pink Rose Ball manages to combine fun with moving tributes to Abaco’s cancer survivors and victims.
The ball, held at Abaco Beach Resort, featured a cocktail party, delicious meal (with desserts of course), a silent and not-so-silent auction, photo booths complete with plenty of dress-up props like feather boas, hats, & speech bubbles, live music, dancing, and hilariously – a fashion show involving five male volunteers wearing pink tutus, sequin and rhinestone decorated pink bras, and high heels.
The evening began as guests arrived at Abaco Beach Resort and posed for photos after a ‘pink carpet’ walk. Pink signature shots dubbed ‘Mango Sunrise’ were given out as a saxophonist entertained guests next to the marina outside the marquee, where inside, exquisitely decorated tables and a dance floor awaited.
The theme of the evening was pink and black with guests dressed in either color or both. Black and white striped table clothes combined with pink chair covered and hot pink glitter covered rose centerpieces in mercury glass created a festively beautiful atmosphere.
Dinner was set up buffet style for over 400 guests and included: assorted dinner rolls with cranberry and hibiscus butter / mixed green salad with pink grapefruit vinaigrette / ceasar salad with dried cranberries / boneless chicken gismonda with sherry sauce, lemon, parmesan, and mushrooms / roasted pork loin with an apple and pecan glaze / a pasta station including: angel hair pasta carbonarra, bow-tie pasta with a light champagne cream sauce, and pasta with lobster, spinach, and tomatoes in a pink vodka sauce / chef’s chicken and sausage paella / scalloped potatoes / sautéed vegetables / cheese cake with muddled berries / strawberry cream puffs with candied hibiscus and lemon / mini mango rum balls / (and finally!) pink velvet cake.
While enjoying the feast attendees bid on silent auction items that ranged from hand-sewn pillow cases to boat rentals and hotel stays. Later, a stunning pink quilt was auctioned off for $6000!
A series of guest speaks entertained, educated, and raised awareness for the cause. The most poignant speeches focused on cancer prevention, the strength and courage of those who have struggled with and won the battle again cancer, and the need for involvement from the community and why community is so important. A touching ceremony was then held where candles were lit in remembrance of loved ones who succumbed to the disease.
After the speakers and auction Suppa Time Band took the stage and everyone danced the night away with the moved on the dance floor continuing well past midnight.
The Pink Rose Ball’s indefatigable committee includes Melinda Pinder, Ruth Saunders, Theresa Albury, Wynsome Ferguson, Brenda Sawyer, and Laura Albury.
